“The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.”
Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (1788-1860)
“I do not regard flesh food as necessary for us. I hold flesh food to be unsuited to our species. To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. The more helpless the creature, the more it is entitled to protection from humans from the cruelty of humans.”
Mohandas K. Gandhi
“Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”
What is a Vegan?
A person who avoids using and consuming animals and animals products for any purpose, including food, clothing, and entertainment.
For my 11th birthday, I was in the Philippines on an island and in celebration for my 11th birthday they decided to have a big feast. I witness my family members kill a pig, goat, sheep, and cow along with some chickens. It was one of most horrific things I have ever experienced. I stopped eating meat automatically and for the rest of my time there which was two months, I only ate potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit. When I got back home, I continued to not eat meat. I did love McDonald’s but would have the Big Mac without the meat. My family was telling me I could not survive and that I had to start eating meat again for the protein. I eventually started eating meat again. Throughout the years, I have been off and on with eating meat.
I finally decided to quit cold turkey in 2012 due to an event I went too, the documentary called Earthlings, and for my compassion towards animals. I did not care what my family or friends would think or say to me. I made a decision, and no one was going change my mind or talk me out of it. Luckily my family and friends were more accepting which made the transition from meat eater to non-meat eater easier.
In 2014, I decided that I would go Vegan completely but I did have the occasional slips up with dairy, specifically cheese and ice cream. I was researching and came across a speech by Gary Yourofsky and found out about the atrocities the animals in the dairy and egg industry had to endure which was way worse than the meat industry. I did not want to be part of anything that would cause harm or suffering to animals just to satisfy my appetite. I chose to eliminate those slip-ups right after my research. Also, since 2014, I have not bought any leather, wool, silk, or down. I do have leather products and down from before I decided to go Vegan, which I will wear out or give away.
I believe there is a huge disconnect with the packaged dairy, egg, and meat products that we see in our grocery stores. I don’t think we stop to think that these were once living being or how and what these animals have to endure to become these packaged products. These animals who are sentient beings have been turned into commodities that can be bought and sold like copper and coffee. These animals are no different than the cats and dogs we chose to call our pets. We have just been conditioned to reduce chickens, pigs, and cows along with other animals as non-beings, non-sentient. It breaks my heart and bring me to tears when I think of what these animals have to go through.
If we are willing to eat meat, dairy, and eggs, we need to become aware of how it is being produced along with the billions of animals that are being killed each year. We also need to become aware of how it impacts us humans, land and marine animals, the water, our rain forest, and our planet.
I have provided links below that will provide you with information on the impacts of consuming meat, dairy, and eggs.
I am grateful for these brave people who decided to speak up because they are educating us, saving people’s lives, and most importantly helping save the lives of these innocent animals. Please keep an open mind and heart☺
